Tim Paine An Understanding of His Australian Captaincy

Tim Paine was handed the Australian captaincy after the Cape Town Test match last year which resulted in then Captain Steve Smith being given an extremely harsh suspension from Cricket Australia. 2 years with out being able to captain. CA also cost Australia their 2 best batters, if not players for 12 months when Smith and the highly successful and match winning opener in David Warner.

Tim Paine was the man given the captaincy called into meetings at short notice Paine gave Australia great hope in the next year match in Johannesburg in early April. Days after taking over from Smith, sent home early with Cameron Bancroft and Warner all who just made a mistake.

Paine is not the best player of all time and he openly acknowledges that he is a very reliable steady leader someone Australian cricket has needed over the last 18 months Australia has performed exceptionally well.

Any team that missed its star players over a home summer would struggle. It disappointing to me that a former player who hardly played test cricket and none in recent times would be so critical of Paine and Australian cricket over the summer. Ed Cowan is very critical and to me he is out of line in his comments on many Australian players. Paine and Travis Head the vice captain who scored an excellent 100 for Australia in Canberra test match against Sri Lanka in February are wonderful leaders.

There is talk that Australian cricket does not have a lot of options outside of Tim Paine but Head is a fine leader for South Australia, who he has captained in all formats since 2014.

Tim Paine highly successful Leader For Australia in tough conditions.

Pat Cummins the Co vice captain with Head has been the leader of the bowling attack in the opening 3 Ashes tests his ability to take wickets and join the 100 club has been something of great enjoyment for Australia. Captain one day while it seems a big task is something Cummins would enjoy.

Australia has lots of positives people including former player on ABC radio should smile and be happy. Paine will not captain forever but please remember the happy attitude he has brought to Australian cricket. He is a positive happy leader and senior player for Australia. He is different from Allan Border and even Ricky Ponting who was Paines first test captain when he and Smith debuted in 2010.

I have known Paine for many years and seeing his success to become Australian captain from near retiring after poor judgement from a very poor state coach in Dan Marsh with Tasmania is of great pride that he never gave up.

Test Captains are forever reminded and always stopped in the street or at functions it comes with the job but it’s not a popularity contest you can just do you’re best and in you’re natural style.
